Fue fundada en 1893 por Richard W. Sears (
n. 1863–m. 1914) y Alvah C. Roebuck (
n. 1864–m. 1948) y creció rápidamente mediante la venta por correo de mercancías a bajo precio a la población rural que no tenía acceso a las tiendas minoristas de la competencia. Durante la gestión de Robert E. Wood (presidente en 1928–54), Sears construyó tiendas minoristas en todo EE.UU. y en 1931 sus ventas al detalle habían sobrepasado a las ventas por correo. En la década de 1980 se diversificó hacia los servicios financieros e introdujo la tarjeta de crédito Discover en 1985, pero en 1992 comenzó a desprenderse de sus filiales de servicios financieros. En 1993 discontinuó su famoso catálogo y en 1995 se desprendió de la filial de seguros Allstate (fundada por Sears en 1931). En 2002, Sears adquirió la empresa de ventas al detalle por catálogo Land's End Inc.
